Home heating tips
Before the cold weather sets in, it pays to make sure that your home heating system is working safely.
Two main dangers from faulty systems are fires and carbon-monoxide poisoning. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has estimates that home heating was linked to an average of more than 33,300 fires and 180 deaths per year in recent years. To help prevent those problems:
- Schedule a yearly professional inspection of fuel-burning systems, including furnaces, fireplaces, water heaters, and chimneys.
- Limit use of portable propane or kerosene space heaters indoors or in enclosed spaces for emergencies only. If you use one, make sure it has an oxygen-depletion sensor, and keep pets, children, and combustible items far away.
- If you use electric space heaters, check that the wiring is in good condition.
- Make sure you have working fire and CO alarms.
